Sweden postpones Midsommar celebration for a crucial World Cup match against the Dutch team

World Cup or no World Cup: for Sweden, Midsommar is the highlight of the summer every year. Traditionally, this national holiday is celebrated on the longest day of the year with family, herring, strawberries and of course revelry. This year, however, things are different, because Sweden is currently playing an important World Cup match against the Dutch team in Dallas.

The start time of the match, Saturday at 12:00 local time, means that there is little to celebrate for the players and staff that day. Team manager Cecilia Sandell informed Swedish media that the party will therefore be postponed: "Two days after Midsommar, we will still organize a celebration here in Dallas. Families, partners and children will be there."


Players like Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres can breathe a sigh of relief: Midsommar is still being celebrated, although it is a bit later than usual. Naturally, national coach Graham Potter will ensure that his selection remains focused, because there is a lot at stake for Sweden. The team is not only up against a strong opponent, but is also fighting for a place in the next round of the World Cup.

If Sweden achieves a good result against the Netherlands, qualification for the knockout phase is almost certain. With four points from two games, Sweden can at least finish third in Group F, which is usually enough for qualification. A minimal draw makes the final match against Japan a lot more relaxing for the Scandinavians.

In short: the Midsommar celebration will be postponed for a while, but the Swedish celebration can become all the more exuberant if a result is achieved against the Dutch team. First the football, then the herring and strawberries.
