Hugo Broos responded after South Africa's 1-1 against the Czech Republic at the 2026 World Cup: according to the national coach, the Czech Republic deliberately played very directly and the game was therefore often up in the air. "They don't like (combination) football. They play very straight and have players who match that. Everyone is tall, which made it difficult for us to play our game in the air," Broos said, as quoted by ESPN. "That's what the Czech Republic did: it's a tactic. I can't say why, that's a choice of the coach. Maybe I would do the same if I were their coach. But if you like football, you probably enjoyed our game today more than the Czech Republic's."
The group stage of the 2026 World Cup runs from June 11 to 27. Each team plays three matches in the groups. The first two countries from each group qualify for the knockout phase, supplemented by the eight best numbers three.
