Real Madrid signs Marc Cucurella for up to €60 million from Chelsea

Real Madrid have signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. The 27-year-old left back signs a six-year contract with the Spanish top club. The Madrid club will reportedly pay €55 million, an amount that could rise to €60 million through bonuses.
The timing is striking: the confirmation came a few hours before the World Cup opening match of reigning European champion Spain, which starts on Monday in Atlanta against Cape Verde. Cucurella seems to play a role in La Roja's selection there.
Chelsea announced via club channels that Cucurella is leaving permanently and thanked the Spaniard for his efforts during his time in London. The defender came over from Brighton in 2022 and, according to the club, played 163 official matches for the Blues, providing eleven assists and scoring nine times.
With the move to Madrid, Cucurella returns to Spain, where he was trained in the youth of Barcelona. At Chelsea he won the Conference League and the World Cup for club teams in 2025. However, the London club will miss European football in 2025-26 and may therefore be forced to sell more players.
For Real Madrid, Cucurella is the first signing since the return of José Mourinho as coach for a second term. According to reports, Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konaté are also expected in Madrid, while a €150 million bid for striker Julián Álvarez has reportedly been rejected by Atlético Madrid.
There was unrest at Chelsea this calendar year due to the suspension of Enzo Fernández after statements about his desire to live in Madrid. In addition, Liam Delap has been mentioned as a target for other Premier League clubs.
