RB Leipzig says goodbye to coach Ole Werner after one season

RB Leipzig announced on Wednesday that it will immediately say goodbye to head coach Ole Werner. The 38-year-old coach was at the helm of the Bundesliga club for only one season. The reason for the departure, according to Jurgen Klopp, who is involved as head of Red Bull's global football project, is that the club is ready for a new direction.

During his time at Leipzig, Werner managed to lead the team to a third place in the Bundesliga, but that final position came at a large deficit of 24 points compared to champions Bayern Munich. In the cup tournament, Leipzig was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Vincent Kompany's team. Under Werner's leadership this season, 23 games were won, five times drawn and ten times lost. Leipzig scored 77 times and conceded 53 goals.

Jurgen Klopp explained Werner's departure: "We function in an advisory capacity as a Global Team and have analyzed the season. Ole has done a great job qualifying for the Champions League, but we also have to look ahead. In that light, the club decided that change was necessary."


Assistants Tom Cichon and Patrick Kohlmann are also leaving Leipzig. The decision was communicated to the entire technical staff by sports director Marcel Schäfer.

Nothing is official about a successor yet, but Martin Demichelis is one of the favorites. The Argentinian is currently head coach at Mallorca, which was recently relegated from La Liga, but Demichelis previously impressed as manager of River Plate, where he won three trophies. Klopp did not want to comment further on names: "I leave speculation to the club. Official announcements will come from Leipzig."
