Dixie Dean: Everton's legendary goalgetter remains unsurpassed

The fourth episode of BBC Radio Merseyside's 'A to Z of Everton' revolves around the letter D, with Dixie Dean taking center stage. Dean is known as one of the most prolific goalscorers in English football. Between 1925 and 1937 he scored 349 goals in 399 league appearances for Everton - an unprecedented average.

According to BBC reporter Ian Kennedy, Dean's stats are nothing short of impressive: "Not many people have actually seen him play, but those numbers speak volumes. His average goals per game, for both club and England, is incredible." Kennedy has no doubt that the record of 60 goals in a single top season, which Dean set in 1927/28, will stand: "People talk a lot about Haaland now, but I don't believe anyone will ever come close to that record."


It is striking that Dean delivered his performances under very different circumstances than today's strikers. While Erling Haaland and associates often play on perfectly maintained turf, Dean had to perform on heavy, waterlogged fields. "It must have been extra tough at the time. You had to play the ball harder and it was debilitating for the body," said BBC colleague Carl Woodward.

Records are meant to be broken, but Dean's achievement seems unique in football history. Ian Kennedy concludes: "You can only be the best of your own time. As a goalscorer, there was simply no one better than him."
