Liverpool asks Chelsea about defender Acheampong, but is rejected

Liverpool are actively looking to strengthen their defense, especially now that Ibrahima Konaté has left the club on a free transfer. Conor Bradley is also expected to miss a large part of the 2026/27 season, increasing the need for defensive reinforcement.

In particular, we are looking for players who can play both centrally and on the right side. In that search, Liverpool, together with other European top clubs, ended up with Chelsea's Josh Acheampong. The 20-year-old defender is seen within Chelsea as a great talent and potential permanent fixture for the future. The club extended his contract in December 2024 until mid-2029 and considers him 'untouchable'.


Despite Acheampong only starting eight times in the Premier League last season, he is seen as a crucial part of the squad by new coach Xabi Alonso. That makes a departure unmentionable, despite interest from Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Juventus, among others. Premier League clubs such as Arsenal, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth have also inquired about him, according to insiders.

Chelsea has so far firmly rejected any rapprochement. A permanent departure seems out of the question, but a domestic loan could be a logical next step, according to English sources, if his prospects for playing time remain limited. In that case, Chelsea would prefer a team that could use Acheampong as both a right central defender and a right back.

For the time being, Acheampong remains a permanent fixture in Chelsea's plans. Liverpool will have to continue the search for reinforcements elsewhere.
