Liverpool confirms Iraola's appointment after Slot's departure
Liverpool have appointed Andoni Iraola as their new head coach following the departure of Arne Slot. Slot had led Liverpool to their second Premier League title, but the title defense was disappointing. Iraola, who was successful at Bournemouth, will be tasked with taking Liverpool back to the top.
Liverpool have confirmed that Andoni Iraola will become the club's new head coach following the sacking of Arne Slot. Slot led Liverpool to their second Premier League title in his first season (2024-25) but were unable to defend the title and finished the season in disappointing fifth place despite spending £450 million on new players. This resulted in the fewest points (60) for a team that finished fifth since Tottenham in 2006–07.
Iraola, who previously coached Bournemouth, has signed a two-year contract with Liverpool. He expresses his enthusiasm about the new challenge: "Liverpool is a big club, one of the biggest in the world. The atmosphere, the supporters, the chance to work with top players and compete for titles, that is very attractive."
Under Iraola, Bournemouth reached European football for the first time in their 127-year history and he led the club to ever-improving Premier League finishes. The club expects Iraola to take charge of a period of transition, with the departure of stars such as Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
