Iwelumo: Che Adams paves the way for black Scottish players at the World Cup

In the run-up to the group stage of the 2026 World Cup, former Scotland striker Chris Iwelumo calls the possible participation of Che Adams a "huge step forward" for Scottish football. If Adams plays, he will become the first black player to represent the Scottish men's team at a world championship, according to Iwelumo.

Iwelumo, himself one of the pioneers more than fifteen years ago with four international matches but without participation in a final round, praises Adams for his performances for Scotland and club Torino. “He is a great guy and an excellent football player, and he deserves to be exactly where he is now,” said Iwelumo, who underlines that Adams sets an example with his presence.


According to Iwelumo, the football and social landscape in Scotland has changed significantly compared to his own youth. Representation is important, but selection should always be about quality. At the same time, he advocates that young players are given the opportunity to break through. “It's small steps, but we're moving in the right direction,” he says, optimistic about the new class coming through.

With a view to next Saturday's World Cup group opener against Haiti, Iwelumo expects Adams can make the difference. He even tips the striker for a historic goal: a goal that he believes would go straight into the history books. “It gives me goosebumps,” says the former international.
