Anderson's rise from League Two loan to potential British record transfer
Elliot Anderson is on course to become the most expensive British footballer ever thanks to his strong performances for Nottingham Forest and his expected role in England's World Cup campaign.
Four years after helping to promote Bristol Rovers from League Two, Elliot Anderson is set for a defining summer. Anderson is expected to be one of England's key players at the upcoming World Cup, and his excellent performances for Nottingham Forest have sparked significant transfer interest, likely making him the most expensive British footballer ever. The 23-year-old has quickly become a key player for national coach Thomas Tuchel, with eight caps this season, just three years after being called up by Scotland.
He is expected to start alongside Declan Rice in midfield when they kick off their World Cup campaign against Croatia on Wednesday 17 June (kick-off 9pm BST). As he prepares to do so, his club future remains uncertain as Forest have already rejected a significant offer from Manchester City for Anderson. Owner Evangelos Marinakis is sticking to a reported figure of £110 million.
Anderson made 12 appearances for England under-21s, scoring two goals. He was also eligible to play for Scotland because of his Glasgow-born grandmother and was selected by Steve Clarke for their Euro 2024 match against Cyprus. He retired through injury before opting to play for England, where he helped win the European Under-21 Championship last summer.
Although Liverpool's Harvey Elliott was named player of the tournament with six goals, including the opening goal in the final against Germany, Anderson stood out and was included in the best XI. He played alongside Bournemouth's Alex Scott in midfield, giving England a solid foundation. Anderson's tireless running was particularly impressive in the 3–1 win over Spain in the quarter-final, where his injury-time penalty took England to the semi-finals, where they defeated the Netherlands on their way to retaining their title in Bratislava.
The summer should be a new platform for Anderson, and he has carried his form into Forest's chaotic season. Despite playing under four different managers in a successful battle against relegation, Anderson has been a constant. In the 3-0 win over Tottenham in December, which kept Forest three points above the relegation zone, Anderson created the most chances (three), completed the most passes (38), won the ball the most times (nine) and made the most tackles (six) of his teammates.

His efforts have impressed the staff and he regularly meets with coaches to discuss the best way to improve both himself and the team. His positional awareness has also been praised, although his work ethic and desire to cover as much ground as possible means he can often exhaust himself. Anderson, who sets high standards for himself and his teammates, is seen by Forest as a player with the potential to become a complete footballer.
“It's been a big two years,” said Anderson, who moved from Newcastle to Forest in 2024 for £35m. "I think I've done quite well in the time I've been here, both on and off the pitch. I'm also as a personmatured and thanks to the club for giving me that platform, allowing me to do my thing. In players' careers, you never know where you'll be. Moving from your hometown is a big step in your career. It was definitely something I had to do and it turned out really well. So I'm glad I took that step."
Anderson's brilliant form has inevitably brought speculation about his future, with particular connections to both Manchester clubs. Anderson scored a brilliant equalizer to save an unlikely equalizer against City in March, and the Blues have long admired the player. They confirmed their interest with an opening offer last week, and sources say they are expected to make a new offer. Anderson tops the club's list of midfield overtargets following the departure of captain Bernardo Silva, and given his rise, they will not hesitate to pay what could become a record fee for a British player. Marinakis is known as a tough negotiator and is believed to want more than the £105 million Arsenal paid to buy midfielder Declan Rice from West Ham in 2023.
BBC Sport has previously reported that Anderson is said to prefer a move to City over rivals United. Anderson's standout performances earned him a place in the team of the season in BBC Sport's inaugural end-of-season football awards. And the statistics are impressive. Among all players in the top division, Anderson had: the most ball contacts (3,300), the most duels won (297), the most free kicks won (80) and the most times he won the ball (306), both in midfield (154) and in the defensive zone (127).
Among central midfielders, he made the most line-breaking passes (376), completed the most overall passes (2,038) and completed the most dribbles (95). He became the first player since Rice in 2019-20 to win more than 300 times and more than 100 in a Premier League season. He also worked hard out of possession - his 1,895 high-intensity pressures were the most by a central midfielder.
