Thomas Tuchel's dramatic half-time intervention leads to England's comeback
Thomas Tuchel's half-time talk inspired England to stage a remarkable comeback against Croatia in their World Cup opener, leading to a 4-2 victory.
Thomas Tuchel's first action when he entered the England dressing room at half-time was to sit down. His team had just conceded a goal with the last kick of the first half, a second sloppy goal that could have been avoided. He knew the players would be on edge and that they needed a quiet moment to catch their breath first.
Tuchel explained to the team that his perception of them and their work would not change if England lost their opening match against Croatia. And if they lost here in Dallas, what then? They would have two more games to put it right. All that mattered was to play as they had practiced since Tuchel's appointment: courageous, brave, aggressive and proactive. They had to show the world who they are and what they can do.
At the same time, Anthony Barry, Tuchel's assistant, gave a television interview. He was harsh on England's use of the ball, calling the performance "complicated and confusing".
Tuchel's team talk must already be seen as one of the most defining half-time interventions in England's World Cup history.
This led to a remarkable period of football, with England increasing the intensity, playing faster and faster, and spinning Croatia around. In the end England won 4-2, but they could have scored six or seven and that would have felt good too.
Within the first 12 minutes of the second half, they had as many shots — nine — as in the first half. They finished with 22 shots. Their best result in recent tournament history was 20 in the Euro 2020 final, which went to extra time. Their xG (expected goals) was 2.8, the third highest in the World Cup so far. The top two were recorded against Qatar (by Switzerland) and Curaçao (by Germany).
Perhaps the most comparable performance so far in this tournament was England's match against Paraguay last week, where they overwhelmed the opposition with speed and intensity, scoring four goals.

There's no question that it felt unusual to see England play like that in a major tournament. Everyone remembers Gareth Southgate's methodical patience, taking a steady step forward at a time. It was historic and significant in its own way, like someone writing a novel or building a bridge. It never looked like this.
But should we really be so surprised? Since Tuchel became England head coach in October 2024, he has spoken time and time again about how he wants England to play. Faster. Braver. Stronger. More like a Premier League team. More high pressure. Making fewer concessions to the conventional wisdom that tournaments require you to play like Fernando Santos' Portugal or Didier Deschamps' France.
Even this week, leading up to this match, the messages were the same. Tuchel said England "must dare and play to the qualities of the players". Harry Kane said England have a "physical team", that this would be a "big aspect of our game", and that the most important thing was to "be free" and not be afraid. Jordan Henderson pointed out the friendly against Costa Rica last week, how well England pressed there in the heat, and that they would try again.
In all these statements thenatural response an eye roll. Because it was easy to talk about physical intensity in Wembley or St George's Park or Belgrade or Riga, but probably harder to do it here in the American summer. That's just not how tournaments work, especially this one, with 48 teams, eight games to win, with a squad largely made up of exhausted Premier League stars.
But Tuchel likes to "do what he says", as he puts it. Above almost everything, he values honesty and backing words with actions. And here outside Dallas, Tuchel did what he said. Because he convinced the players to play his way, to make his words come true on the field.
No one should doubt that this was also a flawed performance from England. The problems in the first half that Barry identified were serious. They gave away two poor goals and in reality none of England's four defenders ever looked completely comfortable. Better, faster teams will benefit from this.
And of course it is inevitable that this was not the real heavy heat of the American summer. This was an air-conditioned stadium. And the amount of running and pressing that England endured, the work you would expect from these players for their clubs, may not be replicable when there is no roof to protect them from the early afternoon sun. Perhaps in Boston, New Jersey and beyond, England will have to make more concessions to conventional wisdom and produce something less distinctive to survive.
But this was the day Tuchel had waited almost two years for. He has sacrificed a lot — domestic competitions, Champions League, two games a week, every day with the players — to get here. What he needed was proof that his ideas can work here on the biggest stage. He had to keep his players calm so he could remind them of what to do.
