Mexico starts the World Cup with a convincing victory over South Africa in a sold-out Azteca Stadium

Mexico opened the World Cup with a convincing 2-0 win over South Africa at the iconic Azteca Stadium. In an atmospheric atmosphere, the national team offered the Mexican fans an escape from the social tensions in the capital, with goals from Julián Quiñones, among others.

The 2026 World Cup has kicked off at the mythical Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with Mexico's national team (El Tri) beating South Africa 2-0. Despite ongoing protests and tensions elsewhere in the city, thousands of supporters flocked to the stadium early. The access roads were surrounded by volunteers, traditional music and revelry, but further away demonstrations and a heavy police presence were still visible.

For the fans in the stadium it was an escape from reality. They enjoyed a radiantly renovated Azteca, completely in World Cup atmosphere and filled with a sold-out crowd. "When we were on our way to the stadium, we were massively encouraged by people along the route. That was nice to see, especially for me as a local," said midfielder Érik Lira after the match.

The opening match was full of World Cup tradition, with a lot of attention to Mexican culture and an exuberant presentation. Despite some criticism of the high prices and Mexico's limited role in the tournament, national feeling prevailed at the whistle. Early in the match, Julián Quiñones took advantage of a defensive error by South Africa: 1-0. The atmosphere in the stadium was deafening.

Trainer Javier Aguirre, himself a former international during the 1986 World Cup, saw his team play in a controlled and dominant manner. South Africa offered little resistance, but Mexico had to stay sharp; the audience can be as demanding as it is enthusiastic. Yet after the second Mexican goal there was relief and joy in the stands.

At the final whistle, the stadium erupted in song and, for a moment, there was complete unity among the Mexican people. Despite the social problems, football remains a powerful bond in Mexico. The 2-0 win offers hope for the rest of the tournament.
