The unforgettable day when the Polish Pope made history at Camp Nou

In 1982, the Camp Nou was visited by Pope John Paul II, who celebrated a mass there for more than 100,000 people. The event remained legendary within the club's history and the city of Barcelona for several reasons. The current papal trip centers on a visit to the Real Madrid stadium, a sharp contrast to its memorable Polish predecessor in Catalonia.

The media frenzy surrounding Pope León That November day more than forty years ago is still a milestone in the history of FC Barcelona.

On November 7, 1982, Polish Pope Karol Wojtyła — later known worldwide as John Paul II — led a mass at the stadium, attended by as many as 113,000 faithful. Despite the pouring rain, the crowd held firm, listening to an hour-long service in Latin and Spanish. It was not only a religious moment, but also a logistical tour de force: the Popemobile turned out to be unusable for the Camp Nou, whereupon car brand SEAT quickly adapted a convertible Panda. Due to the rain, the vehicle was even provided with plastic protection.

On the field, club president Núñez and counselor Anton Parera knelt respectfully before the pope, an official moment that was broadcast in full by RTVE. The Pope spoke only one sentence in Catalan: "Bona nit a tots" as a farewell. His entrance was accompanied by the voices of the Coral Sant Jordi led by Oriol Martorell. He was escorted out via the south corner of the stadium, with the politically charged Catalan song 'La Santa Espina' playing in the background.

The aftermath of that special day was literally palpable: the field was severely damaged by the rain, the crowds of visitors and the stage. As a result, the entire grass had to be replaced. The adjacent Palau Blaugrana was also full of elderly and disabled people, who were greeted from a distance by the Pope.

On the current visit, León XIV will spend three days in Catalonia, but Camp Nou will remain closed to him. This time the Pope chooses Real Madrid's home base, the Santiago Bernabéu, for an official ceremony. Perhaps that is the only chance of seeing a trophy lifted at the Bernabéu this year.
