With so many yellow cards you will be suspended from the 2026 World Cup

FIFA has made important changes to the rules regarding yellow and red cards for the 2026 World Cup, with suspensions and Fair Play playing a crucial role.

Yellow and red cards can play an important role in the 2026 World Cup. Not only because cards can lead to suspensions, but also because they can be one of the deciding factors in a tie in the group. FIFA has made an important change for the coming World Cup. This is how cards and suspensions work at the World Cup.

Suspended for two yellow cards Although the World Cup field and the number of matches have been significantly expanded, FIFA initially left the rules regarding suspensions unchanged in the first version of the regulations for the upcoming final tournament. A second yellow card in two different matches will result in a player being suspended for one match for the next match. A fourth, sixth, eighth (and so on) yellow card also means that you are suspended. Of course, a second yellow card in one match (and therefore red) also means that you are not allowed to participate in the next pot. A direct red card results in at least one match suspension, depending on the nature of the violation.

When are tickets waived? Initially, yellow cards that did not lead to a suspension would only be remitted after the quarter-final. However, at a meeting in Vancouver it was decided to make a change to the regulations for the 2026 World Cup. After the group stage, yellow cards that did not lead to a suspension will be waived, as well as after the quarter-finals. For example, you can only be suspended in the final due to a red card, not due to too many yellow cards. FIFA considers a second remission moment necessary due to the increased number of matches.

If a player faces a suspension and cannot serve it at the 2026 World Cup due to his team being eliminated, he must serve that suspension during the next official international match of his country in a competition recognized by FIFA.

Players who were suspended due to too many yellow cards in World Cup qualifying will not carry this suspension with them to the World Cup. Only a suspension following a red card initially had to be served in the main tournament. FIFA also returned to this later.

Fair play If countries finish on an equal number of points in the group stage of the World Cup, the mutual result will be decisive, followed by the goal difference (including the number of goals scored). If that is also the same, Fair Play will be considered. In other words: the number of cards a team has taken.
