Barcelona keeps options open: Vlahovic only interesting if Álvarez misses

After the departure of Robert Lewandowski this summer, Barcelona faces an important choice: who will be the new attack leader? The Polish striker wore the number 9 for years and was decisive for the team. With Hansi Flick at the helm, Barcelona wants to look ahead again and Julian Álvarez from Atlético Madrid is the dream acquisition.

However, attracting Álvarez is not an easy task. Atlético does not seem to cooperate much and the transfer fee as well as the salary of the Argentinian are enormous. Barcelona is therefore explicitly looking at alternatives. According to various Spanish media, Dusan Vlahovic (who may leave his Italian club on a free transfer) has recently been offered to the Catalan superpower.


Vlahovic requires a salary of around eight million euros per year and a contract of at least two seasons. These are significant amounts for Barcelona and the arrival of the Serbian is mainly seen as a safety net in case Álvarez is not feasible. Vlahovic is therefore not seen as a priority. The attacker has the advantage of being a proven goalscorer, but his form has been inconsistent. Ferran Torres, already in the Barcelona squad, is also struggling with inconsistency.

A transfer from Vlahovic to Barcelona only seems realistic if Álvarez is unavailable and the Serbian adjusts his salary wishes. In the coming weeks it should become clear who will ultimately become the new spearhead in Barcelona's attack.
