VAR moment in France–Senegal: why no penalty for Mbappé?

France had an early controversial moment in New Jersey in its opening match at the 2026 World Cup against Senegal. Kylian Mbappé dribbled into the penalty area, where Sadio Mané stepped in with a sliding. The moment Mané collapsed, the French captain tapped the ball past his opponent and then landed on the grass.
Referee Alireza Faghani waved away the French protest and initially awarded a corner kick. However, on the advice of the VAR, the Australian referee walked to the screen himself. While the French players and staff were already half cheering in anticipation of a penalty, Faghani returned with the announcement: “The attacker initiated the contact.” To make matters worse for Les Bleus, the corner kick was even converted into a goal kick after the replays, because Mané did not touch the ball.
The decision stunned analysts. "That's just nonsense. Complete nonsense. How can he (Mbappé) initiate the contact?" grumbled Pat Nevin on BBC Sport. Alan Shearer called it "bizarre": "You see Mané's effort and his left leg hits Mbappé. How can Mbappé initiate the contact when he is in front of him?" Former assistant referee Darren Cann (assistant in the 2010 World Cup final) also couldn't support it: "For me, this is a clear penalty. My phone is filling up with messages from top refs who don't understand it either. After a correct VAR check, he should have pointed to the spot."
For France, the annoyance did not last long. A few minutes later, Mbappé scored after a clever through ball from Michael Olise. Substitute Bradley Barcola then scored the second French goal, putting a two-goal margin on the board.
