Patrick Vieira: “I was very proud to play for France, but Senegal remains part of me”
In a candid interview, Patrick Vieira explains how his Senegalese origins and French successes have shaped him. As a midfielder for the French national team, he attended the 1998 World Cup, but his roots in Dakar were never far away. Vieira reflects on the sensational defeat to Senegal in 2002, the role of immigration within the French national team and his contribution to Senegalese football through his academy. Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, where France will once again play Senegal, Vieira shares his views on national pride and the changing meaning of origins in international football.
Patrick Vieira is considered one of the great French midfielders, with successes for club and country to his name. Yet his background is at least as special as his achievements. Born in Dakar, Senegal, but moving to France at a young age, Vieira went on to become a World Cup winner with Les Bleus. In the run-up to the 2026 World Cup, where France will again face Senegal, he looks back on his experiences and the meaning of national identity in international football.
During the Confederations Cup in 2001, Vieira spoke to teammates such as Marcel Desailly and Robert Pirès about their roots. Star players such as Karembeu (New Caledonia), Djorkaeff (Armenia) and Desailly (Ghana) testify to the diverse origins of the French team. For Vieira, his Senegalese roots were a source of pride, even though he barely knew his father from Gabon and was mainly raised by his Cape Verdean mother.
The historic encounter between France and Senegal at the 2002 World Cup was dramatic for the defending champions. Papa Bouba Diop scored the winning goal; Senegal made history with one of the biggest World Cup stunts ever. Vieira remembers the motivation and fighting spirit of the Senegalese. “They may have wanted it more than we did that day.”
That defeat had an impact, not only sportingly but also socially. Vieira emphasizes how the French national team made a political statement with players of diverse origins in a period of tensions over immigration and identity. “The success at the World Cup brought people together, even if sometimes only temporarily.”

The current French team is still a mirror of the multicultural society, with players such as N'Golo Kanté, Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé with roots in Africa. Senegal also has many players who were trained in France. Kalidou Koulibaly, born in France, now defends the colors of Senegal, underscoring the historical ties between the two countries.
After his active career, Vieira committed himself to founding Institut Diambars, a football school in Senegal where education and sport go hand in hand. Four players from the current Senegalese selection have now completed their training there. “We want to prepare young people not only for football, but especially for life.”
For Vieira, national pride has never been a question. “I was always proud of the France shirt, but Senegal remains a part of who I am.” When France and Senegal meet again in 2026, he expects that the motivation among the Senegalese will be as high as ever: “They will want to prove something.”
The meeting between France and Senegal at the upcoming World Cup will therefore not only be a sporting spectacle, but also a test of strength with deep historical and personal roots for players with a dual identity.
