Marc Cucurella chooses Real Madrid over returning to Barcelona
Marc Cucurella, trained at La Masia, makes a remarkable move from Chelsea to Real Madrid. Although he wanted to return to Barcelona, the Catalans' financial situation made this impossible. Real Madrid will pay up to €60 million for the left-back, who should become Jose Mourinho's first choice in the left-back position.
Marc Cucurella was the news in Spanish football this week, after it was announced that he is switching from Chelsea to Real Madrid. The Spanish international, who came from Barcelona's youth academy (La Masia), initially seemed to mainly hope for a return to his old club. According to Spanish media, Cucurella was eager to return to Barcelona, but due to the dire financial situation, this is currently not possible for the Catalans.
A move to Real Madrid therefore became the serious alternative. The club from the capital will reportedly pay a maximum of €60 million (including bonuses), an amount that Barcelona cannot possibly match, partly because they are mainly focusing on attracting a new attacker. Missing out on a player from their own youth and his direct transfer to their biggest rival is a hard blow for Barcelona.

Cucurella has the prospect of a starting position as a left back at Real Madrid, where he is expected to compete with the likes of Álvaro Carreras and Fran García. The arrival of Cucurella comes at a time when Barcelona himself is struggling with injuries and changing form with Alejandro Balde. Balde has also been linked with a possible move to Manchester City, who are reportedly willing to pay €70 million for him. Should that transfer go through, Barcelona will have to enter the transfer market again for a left back — a role for which Cucurella was previously seen as an ideal candidate.
For now, Real Madrid takes their chance and brings in a valuable reinforcement with Cucurella, while Barcelona is once again confronted with their own economic limitations.
