It earned him the election of man of the match and an explosion of attention: his followers on Instagram increased from just over 50,000 to over 12 million.
Yet tears were shed after the final whistle. Vozinha said he grew up with his grandparents, who have since passed away, and that his mother could not attend the match because she could not get a visa. The application required a refundable deposit of $15,000, which was not possible in time.
That is now changing. Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the US House of Representatives, announced that a visa has been arranged for Vozinha's mother to travel to the United States and attend the match in Miami. According to Jeffries, the fees have been waived in line with policy and travel plans are being worked on to reunite mother and son this weekend. Jeffries indicated that he has also been in contact with Marco Rubio about this.
