Germany surpasses Brazilian record with another 7-1 at World Championships

The German national team broke the Brazilian team's 26 records at the World Cup. By scoring seven goals against Curacao last Sunday, Germany now has 239 goals in World Cup history, overtaking Brazil's previous record of 238 goals. Argentina completes the top three with 152 goals.

Four-time world champions Germany already have the best average goals per match, having only participated in the tournament 21 times. Brazil, on the other hand, has participated in all 23 editions. Germany decided not to participate in the first edition of 1930, as did several other European national teams. In addition, West Germany was not allowed to participate in the 1950 World Cup qualifying matches, due to a FIFA sanction after World War II, which was only lifted after the tournament in Brazil.


After two World Championships in which Germany failed in the group stage (2018 and 2022), the team now showed its strength again and seems to be on its way to a possible new record. The most goals scored in an edition was in 1954, when it won the title in Switzerland and found the net 25 times. Germany even lost 8-3 to Hungary in the group stage, but took revenge in the final by winning 3-2.

Germany has scored 10 or more goals in 13 different World Cups, a similar feat to Brazil. The 7-1 victory over Curaçao also marked another milestone for Germany. There were three previous World Cup matches in which the team scored seven or more goals, as did Hungary, and now there are four. In addition to the 7-1 against Brazil, Germany also has an 8-0 win over Saudi Arabia in 2002 and a 7-2 against Turkey in the aforementioned 1954 World Cup.
