Analysis: Saibari sprints to pieces Scotland's Hakimi plan

Morocco beat Scotland 1-0 and almost secured the knockout stage, with Ismael Saibari playing the leading role.

Morocco must start playing football as a top country. That is the message that the players and national coach are conveying towards the World Cup. After showing off at the 2022 World Cup with defensively tough underdog football, new selector Mohamed Ouahbi is trying to get the best out of his golden generation of midfielders with energetic possession football. With Ismael Saibari as a 'false' striker and playmakers Bilal El Khannouss (Stuttgart) and Brahim Díaz (Real Madrid) on the flanks, Morocco also starts the second group match with essentially six (talented) midfielders. After a convincing start by Morocco against Brazil, national coach Steve Clarke has seen enough. The ever-pragmatic Scot treats the Moroccan collection of technicians as the top country they want to be. The Scottish 4-4-2 with two pure strikers against Haiti now makes way for a 4-5-1 with four pure midmids and a left back (Kieran Tierney) in midfield. In the famous Gillette Stadium on the outskirts of Boston, the Scottish battle plan appears to be mainly aimed at stopping one man. Something Saibari gratefully takes advantage of.
